For many of us, spring signals the start of a “new year”. But it also signals the stress of finding my family a sunscreen that is both non-toxic and effective – a feat that is surprisingly difficult!
This year, I decided to eliminate the middle man and make my own! Now, I no longer have to wonder what hidden toxins lurk in my sunscreen. I have full control over the ingredients and feel confident that my family is safe in the sun.
Ingredients
- 1/4c zinc oxide (non-nano)
- 1/4c extra virgin coconut oil
- 1/4c shea butter
- 2tsp extra virgin olive oil
- 2tsp avocado oil
- 2tsp carrot seed oil
- 2tsp raspberry seed oil
- 2tsp jojoba oil
- 5-10 drops of topically safe essential oil of choice (lavender, citronella, etc.)
- Glass storage jar and/or squeezable bottle
Instructions
- Combine the zinc oxide, coconut oil, and shea butter into a small crockpot or in a stovetop pot over low heat.
- Separately, combine the olive, avocado, carrot seed, jojoba, and raspberry oils with your essential oil of choice (should be about 1/4c total). Stir to combine all ingredients.
- Melt down, turn off heat, and let cool.
- Pour into your preferred bottle or jar.
- Apply every 1 hour when outside in the sun.
It’s hard to believe how incredibly quick and easy it is to make this homemade sunscreen recipe. I think it took me maybe 15 minutes total from the time I got all my ingredients out until I was pouring it in my glass storage container. I also got a few silicone squeeze bottles from Amazon so that I can send my daughter to school with some of this sunscreen too! This batch makes plenty to split up into a few small bottles if you have several kids who each need to keep a sunscreen at school, or if you want to keep sunscreen in several locations around your house or in a different cars.
